What Is Generative AI? A Practical Explanation
Learn what generative AI produces, how prompts shape output and why verification still matters.
The short answer: Generative AI creates new text, images, audio, video or code by learning patterns from data and producing outputs in response to instructions or other inputs. The output can be useful without being factual.
Generation is not retrieval
A model can produce a fluent answer by predicting likely content. Unless a system connects the answer to reliable sources, fluency does not show where a claim came from.
Prompts set the task
A useful prompt states the goal, audience, constraints, source material and desired format. Examples can clarify quality, but they do not eliminate model errors.
Match oversight to stakes
Brainstorming a headline and interpreting a medical result require different review. Increase verification, expert involvement and privacy controls as consequences rise.
Keep a human decision point
Ask what the model produced, what evidence supports it, what could be missing and who is accountable for using it.
Put it into practice
Try this: Give the same task to an AI with and without source material. Compare factual traceability, usefulness and the amount of human checking required.
