PRACTICAL SKILLS / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Spaced Repetition: Review at the Right Time
Use retrieval and gradually spaced reviews to make important knowledge easier to recall.
The short answer: Spaced practice revisits material across separate sessions rather than concentrating all study at once. Pairing spacing with active retrieval makes the learner reconstruct the answer instead of merely rereading it.
Retrieve before reviewing
Close the material and write what you remember. Then compare with the source and correct the gaps. The effort is part of the practice.
Increase the interval
Review soon after learning, then extend the gap when recall is successful. Shorten it when the material is repeatedly missed.
Use meaningful prompts
Ask for explanations, examples and distinctions, not only isolated definitions. A good card tests one idea and has a clear answer.
Mix related skills
Interleave a few problem types so you must choose the method. Keep the mix manageable enough to diagnose mistakes.
Track difficult items
Mark prompts that fail repeatedly and inspect why. The problem may be vague wording, missing prerequisite knowledge or too much information packed into one question.
Put it into practice
Try this: Create five retrieval prompts for something you want to retain. Review them tomorrow, then extend the interval only after successful recall.
